The winners of our under 21 section, Redefine, is helping to do just to the music scene in San Diego. A four-piece band rocking chaotic grooves and melodic roar. You should check these guys out while there still playing in San Diego on a regular basis. The band consists of Matt Sutherland singing and playing guitar, R.J. Hernandez on bass guitar, and twin brothers Matt and Mark Manders playing drums and guitar respectively. I recently had a chance to sit down with Sutherland for few words.
SDMS- How long have you guys been playing together? Matt Sutherland- About a year and a half now. It starter out with just me and Matt Manders. I had a solo gig at Hot Monkey Love Café and I didn’t want to play solo so I called up Matt, and he came down and played with his electronic kit. It sounded cool so we kept playing together. We called R.J., who was playing in a metal band at the time and it worked. He enjoys not having to dip into just one genre. At first we weren’t sure if the two styles would work, but they complimented each other very well. We added Mark officially about a month ago. He has always been there, just waiting to get his equipment squared away. SDMS – What do you guys do to support your music addiction? MS- I work and go to school at SDSU. I’m studying English and Sociology. R.J. Also goes to SDSU, he is studying Psychology. Mark and Matt both work at the airport for TSA. I bet you feel safer now. SDMS- When did you know you wanted to be a musician? MS- A long time ago, but it didn’t seem like something that was attainable at the time. It was only a few years ago that I started feeling like really do this for a living. It is addictive. I can’t seem to get away from it. I am most inspired to write and play at like 2 or 4 o’clock in the morning. My neighbors love me. SDMS- The dreaded question, how do you describe you music? MS- Hip-hop, reggae, metal, new metal, based in good song writing. I come up with most of the song and the other guys contribute what they bring to the table. It works out well. SDMS- Any last words? MS- Redefine! You can catch redefine at Blind Melons in Pacific Beach on Garnet Ave. next to Crystal Pier, on April 5th at 9:00 pm performing in the Cream of the Crop Winners Showcase.
