Following the break up of Los Angeles's Jurassic 5, the group's main MC, Akil, has had a growing solo career and opportunities to play with many artists. Seeing the talent in San Diego based lyricist Alfred Howard and the K23 Orchestra, Akil has decided to join the group on Saturday, August 4, 2007 for a special performance at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA.
Alfred Howard and the K23 Orchestra is a unique blend of funk, rock, hip hop and spoken word. The band consists of five pieces including keys & organ, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. A crowd favorite wherever they go, the K23 delivers high-energy funk fueled by rapid-fire conscious lyricism.
The group is simply 5 young men who live and love music. The music the group creates helps others think, share, take action and celebrate. As with Community, the friction that exists between the members is the beauty that is born from tension resolved.
In addition to the group's national touring schedule in the 4 short years the band has existed, their community accolades include, Alfred Howard nominated San Diego Cultural Activist of the Year, performances for the likes of Howard Zinn, Ralph Nadar, Bobby Kennedy and Senator Barbara Boxer, a featured artist at the 2004 and 2006 San Diego Foundation for Change's "Changemaker Celebration" as well as various fundraisers and youth events.
The K23 has found an audience in the world of funk fiends, jam-bands fans, hip-hop heads and poetry lovers. Alfred Howard's lyrics transcend a style or genre, appealing to humanities most primal essence. Their message is one of social change through music and art.
